His was a dark star in genre only, because friends of the late George A. Romero also knew him as an oversized teddy bear of a man.

Mr. Romero, who died from cancer in July at age 77, had been nominated to receive a Hollywood Walk of Fame star this autumn. It's not an inexpensive proposition: Roughly $60,000 must be raised or donated in the director's name to cover the expenses of not just placing the star but events surrounding the ceremony.

An online Generosity by Indiegogo effort has been established as the George A. Romero Star Fund by organizers Chris Roe and Matt O'Neill.
