It was with sadness that I read James Moritz's Aug. 23 letter ("Palestinians Must Take Responsibility for Their Plight"). It seems obvious that Mr. Moritz cares about Israel and its survival, as I do. Yet his words advocate positions and misperceptions that make it less likely that Israel will survive as both the homeland of the Jewish people and a democracy.

Mr. Moritz states that Leila Richards' op-ed ("Whose Holy Land? Conditions in the Occupied Territories Do Not Get the Attention They Deserve," Aug. 17) reveals bias by its use of the word "occupation." He states that "based on archaeology [and] the Bible" the use of this term is inappropriate.

Yet as a former college professor of international relations (as well as a longtime synagogue member), I must clarify that "occupation" is a specific legal and political term and Israel's control of the West Bank is an "occupation" according to current international law, legal theory and political science. …
