Metro Bans Smoking at All Transit Center Properties, Including Bus Shelters and Lots

All Metro transit center properties in Missouri and Illinois, from waiting areas to park-ride lots, will ban smoking, including the use of e-cigarettes, beginning Sept. 5.

Smoking is already prohibited on all MetroBus, MetroLink and Metro Call-A-Ride vehicles and MetroLink station platforms. The new ban will also prohibit smoking in indoor waiting areas and outdoor areas, including bus shelters and MetroLink stations.

"We are creating a healthier environment for the transit riding public," Ray Friem, executive director of Metro Transit, said in a statement, adding that feedback from riders indicated a desire for a smoke-free transit experience.

When MetroBus service returned to the Civic Center Transit Center earlier this month, it became the Metro's first smoke-free Metro transit center location, Metro said Wednesday. …
