The Atlanta Braves traded veteran second baseman Brandon Phillips to the Los Angeles Angels late Thursday night for former Pirates catcher Tony Sanchez.

Phillips, 36, has a partial no-trade clause that included 12 teams, one of which was the Angels.

The three-time former All-Star had to approve any trade to any team on the list, and he did just before the midnight deadline for teams to acquire players who can be eligible for postseason rosters.Sanchez, 29, hit .272 with four homers this season at Class AAA Salt Lake.

It was the second major upgrade for the previously punchless Angels (other than Mike Trout) in less than 12 hours. Earlier, they acquired Justin Upton from Detroit. To get Upton, a four-time All-Star outfielder, the Angels gave up pitching prospect Grayson Long and cash or a player to be named. …
