PEP Guardiola suffered a deadline day to forget as City failed to land either of their two targets.

The Blues could not seal deals for Alexis Sanchez or Jonny Evans after a day of wrangling with Arsenal and West Brom.

City offered the Gunners £55m plus £5m in add-ons after having their initial £50m bid for Sanchez rejected.

Arsenal accepted that deal on the proviso they could bring in a replacement. But their sensational £90m offer for Thomas Lemar fell through despite Monaco accepting it, with the player not interested in moving to the Emirates.

That saw City's chance of landing Sanchez evaporate - though reports suggest they will attempt to land the forward next summer when he will be out of contract.

Evans' move from West Brom also collapsed because of the stance of another player. Eliaquim Mangala's reluctance to accept a £22m switch from City to Crystal Palace was the key issue. …
