Several recent commentaries in the PG have suggested building more monuments reflecting equality instead of removing existing ones - including Brian O'Neill's "No Need to Tear Down Stephen Foster" (Aug. 24). This seems like a fine idea.

In the current furor about monuments, I must agree with longtime civil rights activist, former mayor of Atlanta, former ambassador and former congressman Andrew Young. He says he has always preferred "substance over symbols" and believes that there are far more important things to be dealt with in our society.

I'm not insensitive to the feelings about Confederate monuments - when they were built and what they may represent.

But the inclusion of the Stephen Foster statue in the controversy, and the cancellation of a showing of the movie "Gone With the Wind," shows how far afield such furor can go. …
