BLACKPOOL has a long, proud tradition of stars pulling the big switch and lighting up the illuminations.

But this year for the first time ever, a single star wasn't announced to do the honours. Instead it was billed as a Star Trek-themed intergalactic switch-on.

No one knew exactly what to expect, but in typical Blackpool fashion it boldly went where no one has gone before.

After a 'black out' on stage, dance act Diversity called for help to flick the big switch and light up Blackpool.

And help appeared in the shape of Star Trek star Jason Isaacs on a huge screen. He then called on Star Trek to help out, sending a huge laser beam down onto central pier, which beamed back to the top of the Tower.

The Tower then slowly lit up as it loaded with power. Electricity was restored to the stage, and more importantly the big illumination switch. …
