The lock keeper's cottage in Castlefield has a fascinating history - and it's now up for rent again.

It is believed to be the only detached house in the city centre and has three bedrooms, a study, a conservatory and a garden. It costs a substantial £2,250 per month to rent.

The home sits on the banks of the Rochdale Canal next to Dukes 92, Albert's Shed and near Barca.

It was built in the 1800s and was once a ticket office and staff quarters owned by the Ship Canal Company.

In 1989, after years lying empty, local businessman Jim Ramsbottom, 78, from Salford, bought it for £15,000. He fixed it up and turned the cottage into an office from where he ran his property company. …
