Our nation's public school system was founded on the principle that education of all children is critical to a robust society. As early as the 19th century, Horace Mann was arguing that universal public education was the best way to turn children into responsible citizens. It was this commitment that set the United States apart from Europe for much of the 20th century.

President Donald Trump's recent announcement that he intends to end immigration protection for children under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program flies not only in the face of this principle, but also defeats his own oft-stated promise to "make America great again." Without education, there can be no greatness, only despair; without education, there can be no future, only regression.

Regardless of how we may feel about illegal immigration, we must remember that the children who will lose protection under this policy rollback are in the United States through no action of their own. …
