Major haul for police after extensive probe

RED DEER, Alta. - A drug-trafficking investigation in Red Deer, Alta., that turned into a money-laundering probe has led to the seizure of a $300,000 home and about $14,000 in cash as proceeds of crime.

The RCMP initially seized more than 10,000 prescription pills and over $15,000 in cash during a June 2015 search.

A man was arrested on drug and stolen property charges at the time, but a further check of numerous documents led to new charges involving alleged money laundering.

The Red Deer home and the cash have been retained under the Civil Asset Forfeiture Program.

The program allows the courts to seize property obtained by crime and use money from its sale to compensate crime victims or reimburse expenses.
