Wesolich Helps Lafayette Knock off Upset-Minded Eureka

EUREKA * Lafayette senior middle blocker Kathryn Wesolich spent the first part of her career in silence.

By her own design.

"I used to be so shy," Wesolich said. "I'd hardly talk to anyone. I wasn't the most outgoing kid."

Lancers senior hitter Merry Gebel remembers those days.

"It was difficult to get her to speak at all," Gebel said.

Not anymore.

The lanky 6-foot-2 Wesolich has become a force both verbally and on the court.

Wesolich recorded a team-high seven kills to lead the Lancers to a thrilling 24-26, 25-17, 25-20 victory over Eureka on Thursday in a Suburban West Conference showdown at Eureka High.

Lafayette, the six-time defending state champion, posted its 19th successive victory over Eureka. The Wildcats last win in the series came on Nov. 24, 2006.

The triumph was not an easy one for the Lancers, who won their fourth successive match after a season-opening loss to St. Joseph's.

"We knew how good they were, we knew it was going to be a battle," Lafayette coach Zach Young said.

Wesolich helped spell the difference down the stretch. She had three kills, an ace and a key block in the decisive third game.

"In my club season and at the start of this season, I've been working really hard especially at being a leader," Wesolich said. "I think I've broken out of my shell and made an effort to be a leader."

Wesolich has improved her all-around game as well. She was a threat at the net and the service line on Thursday.

"She's got a great arm," Young said. "There might be times when nobody pays attention to her. But we know just how good she is."

Wesolich, Gebel and Lily Cooper helped the Lancers reclaim the momentum after Eureka delighted a loud home crowd with a thrilling win in the opener.

"We cleaned up some of our errors," said Gebel, who added six kills. "When we play Eureka, we're big rivals and we might have been a little tight. …
