I worry a lot about climate change. My adult children and I wrestle with feelings of anxiety and despair regarding society's future and our place in it.

Most of my generation has "kicked the can" down the road to my children's generation. Our planet has a high fever, and it's not going to get better unless we quickly reduce and begin to draw down greenhouse gas pollution. I believe that if we don't act decisively and deeply on climate change, the other vexing issues won't matter. The proposed state budget ("A Severance Tax on Gas Drilling Is Only Fair," Aug. 31 Brian O'Neill column) is penny-wise but ton-foolish. In exchange for a small severance tax, it allows the fossil fuel industry to write its own permits, while leaving the state Department of Environmental Protection gutted, removing that agency's authority to protect us. …
