State Finance Council Approves Disaster Spending

The State Finance Council on Monday unanimously approved $125,000 in expenditures from the state emergency fund for Hurricane Harvey relief assistance, and Gov. Sam Brownback said the state may need to appropriate more money in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

Swift water rescue teams from across Kansas traveled to Texas last month to help with rescues in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, which flooded Houston and caused damage to large parts of southeast Texas. The State Fire Marshal requested the funds to reimburse expenditures related to Harvey relief. Shawn Sullivan, the state's budget director, said the emergency fund will be reimbursed by the state of Texas and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

"I really want to thank the crews from Kansas that went to Harvey," Brownback said. …
