Raising Taxes Is Not the Way to Solve Pa.'s Fiscal Problems

Gov. Tom Wolf's call for the House to support the Senate's tax increases will not solve the state's budget problem. Since the Legislature has raised various taxes in four of the last eight years, we should have learned by now that raising taxes for the fifth time in nine years will not solve our annual budget gaps.

Rather, the reason the state struggles to pay its bills each year is that spending continues to grow faster than inflation. In fact, last year's growth of 4.28 percent was more than four times faster than the 1 percent inflation rate. Without reducing the dramatic growth of spending, Pennsylvania will never get its fiscal house in order.

I find it hypocritical that the state expects us to reduce our spending by raising the taxes we pay on our utility bills each month. The energy taxes the governor is supporting will do just that and fall disproportionately on those households that can least afford it. …
