Police Hope DNA Gives Them Answers about Foot Found in South St. Louis County Park

Detectives hope DNA can solve the mystery of the severed foot in a red tennis shoe.

Hikers in south St. Louis County discovered the shoe with human remains Sept. 4. It was along the banks of the Mississippi River in Bee Tree Park.

"It appears the foot washed up from the water, that's how close it was to the water," said Sgt. Shawn McGuire of the St. Louis County Police Department.

Searchers combed the banks to look for more remains. They waded into the water, but only a foot or two deep because they were worried about the river's current. They found nothing.

Chances are, police say, the foot belongs to someone on a missing persons list. Detectives have been asking other departments, including river towns up and down the Mississippi, about missing persons.

Police will say publicly only that the shoe was a men's red tennis shoe between sizes 11 and 14. …
