Biologists Investigating Mysterious Carp Kill at Pymatuning State Park

Biologists from the state Fish and Boat Commission were expecting results this week from testing conducted on dead carp that have been washing onto the shores of Pymatuning Reservoir, Crawford County, for several weeks.

Dan Bickel, manager of Pymatuning State Park, said the common carp is the only species to have been affected. The fish continue to wash ashore in groups of 10 to 15 throughout most of the lake south of the spillway on Hartstown Road and in Ohio and Pennsylvania jurisdictions.

"It's a significant kill. It doesn't seem to have affected the sanctuary waters on the north end of the lake," said Mr. Bickel.

None of the dead fish were found near the spillway, where thousands of carp famously gather with their heads sticking out of the water to snag pieces of bread thrown by visitors. …
