LABOUR face a potentially tricky by-election in Salford next month.

Their candidate suffered a surprise defeat at a by-election in Kersal ward where the Tories captured a seat they have not won for a quarter of a century.

In that contest in March, Rabbi Arnold Saunders snatched a seat with a 21 per cent swing.

The Tories took 850 votes, boasting a majority of 297. Labour candidate Mike Pevitt took 553 votes.

Now Mr Pevitt is to stand again for Labour in Claremont ward in a by-election on October 5. Former Liberal Democrat councillor and UKIP candidate Mary Ferrer, who lives in the ward, is standing as independent.

She was well regarded as a local councillor before losing her seat to Labour.

The election has been called after the death of veteran councillor, Joe Murphy, in May. …
