I agree that the U.S. government should continue to support Morocco, our strongest ally in North Africa ("Rocky in Morocco," Aug. 29 editorial). However, the Post-Gazette's characterization of Morocco under Mohammed VI is mistaken.

As the former U.S. ambassador to Morocco (1997-2001), I had a unique opportunity to witness his hard work in implementing his vision for his country. He has moved Morocco irreversibly toward democratic government. The government may have its shortcomings, but it is elected through free and fair elections - for the national Parliament, regional governments and local councils, and King Mohammed regularly urges greater citizen engagement to improve the quality of elected officials. In 2011, Moroccans approved a constitutional referendum to grant even more powers to these elected branches. …
