St. Louis Offers Forgivable Loans for Businesses Damaged in Unrest

Businesses that have been damaged during recent unrest can apply for forgivable loans of up to $1,500 from the St. Louis Development Corp.

The board of the city's economic development arm approved on Thursday the establishment of the forgivable loan program. The move follows protests that sometimes led to property damage as people took to the streets after the not-guilty verdict Friday of former St. Louis police Officer Jason Stockley in the 2011 shooting death of Anthony Lamar Smith.

Officials said about 12 businesses were damaged in the Central West End after protests Friday. Another 10 businesses were damaged downtown after demonstrations escalated Sunday night. Several other businesses were damaged in the Loop entertainment district, which spans the line between St. Louis and University City. …
