Central Catholic Trips Seneca Valley

Article excerpt

Seneca Valley gave the Central Catholic Vikings all they could handle at Highmark Stadium Friday night, but it wasn't enough to pull off what would have been a stunning upset.

The Class 6A No. 2 Vikings (4-1, 3-0) fell behind early in the Northern Seven Conference battle, then came back to hold the Raiders (1-3, 1-2) off late in a 28-20 victory. Central has won four games in a row following a crushing 40-7 defeat against Erie Cathedral Prep in its season opener.

The Vikings struck first on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Troy Fisher to Jordan Rheingrover in the first quarter, but the Raiders quickly tied it on a 75-yard scoring strike from Gabe Lawson to Jake Bunofsky. Luke Smith caught a 4-yard touchdown from Lawson to give Seneca Valley a 14-7 second-quarter lead, but Central took over from there.

Khalil Weathers tied the score on a 23-yard touchdown run, then Gavin Thomson tacked on a 42-yard punt return for a score, allowing the Vikings to take a 21-14 lead by halftime. Neither team scored in the third quarter, but Weathers found the end zone again in the fourth -- this time from seven yards out -- to make it a 28-14. Noah Mancuso added a 13-yard touchdown run for Seneca Valley.

Central now heads into one of the most anticipated matchups of the season next week against Pine Richland in a battle for Class 6A supremacy. The Class 6A No. 1 Rams remained undefeated after a 54-20 rout against Bethel Park.

* North Allegheny 29, Butler 7: Turner White powered visiting North Allegheny to a victory. Last week, he rushed for 124 yards and two scores on five carries in North Allegheny's 55-7 win against Shaler. John Varzdell got the scoring started with a 38-yard touchdown catch of a Luke Trueman pass in the first quarter, while White closed the show with a 2-yard scoring plunge in the fourth. …
