Wheelchair-Accessible Trail Built along Scenic Little Beaver Creek by Volunteers

Article excerpt

As part of the Oct. 1 Health Hike on up to 10 miles of the North Country National Scenic Trail in Beaver County, the North Country Trail Association's Wampum Chapter officially will open an adjacent wheelchair-accessible spur trail.

The volunteer group built it this summer on land owned by its president, Dennis Garrett, and his wife, Cathy.

The 200-yard spur trail curves between the North Country Trail and Little Beaver Creek at Watt's Mill. There's a trailhead with parking where the NCT crosses Watt's Mill Road.

Mr. Garrett was the project's main driver, but he had a lot of help from other chapter members and friends.

East Fairfield Coal of North Lima, Ohio, donated 80,000 pounds of limestone for the surface, and Bessemer Concrete in Petersburg, Ohio, trucked it to the site for free. Excavation was donated by Joe Demuzio of Joe Demuzio Developers in Beaver Falls, and there were other donations from Amerikohl Mining of Wampum and United Rentals of Columbiana, Ohio. Mr. Garrett says the trail couldn't have been built without all that support. "It was a beautiful thing," he says.

The Wampum Chapter partners with the Knights Of Columbus Council 604 on this third Health Hike to benefit McGuire Memorial, which provides comprehensive services to people with mental and physical disabilities, and St. Anthony School Programs for children with Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disabilities.

Hikers need to raise at least $50 in pledges to participate in the hike, which offers routes of 4, 6.5 and 10 miles. (Hikers under age 18 can hike if a parent signs a waiver and for a donation of their choosing.) Participants must sign up here - www.saintmonica.us/health-hike - but can bring their pledge sheets and donations that Sunday.

Hikers will start on the Pennsylvania/Ohio state line. Shuttle service will be provided to the starting point from St. Teresa of Calcutta Maronite Catholic Mission in Darlington, which is the end point of the hike and where post-hike refreshments will be served. …
