Man shot by police officers had weapons: acting chief

Calgary's acting police chief says a man who was shot by officers rushed out of a garage and confronted them with several weapons.

Chief Ray Robitaille says police were called on Wednesday afternoon about a man who had allegedly assaulted several people at a home and then left.

He says the man, who is known to police, was found in the garage of another home, and text messages and conversations with friends and family indicated he was in distress.

Robitaille says officers, who believed the man had a weapon, tried for 90 minutes to get him to surrender peacefully.

The acting police chief says about 8 p.m. the man came out of the garage quickly, carrying weapons, and confronted the officers.

He says the situation escalated and a Taser and guns were used; the man remains in serious condition in hospital. …
