The trial of two top aides to former Liberal premier Dalton McGuinty is hearing arguments about whether a key prosecution witness should be able to testify as an unbiased expert.

Defence lawyer Scott Hutchison told a Toronto court that former police officer Robert "Bob" Gagnon should be disqualified as a witness in the case.

Hutchison says Gagnon cannot be considered independent and impartial, since he was an intimate member of the team that investigated and prosecuted David Livingston and Laura Miller.

Both of them have pleaded not guilty to illegally destroying documents related to the Ontario government's cancellation of two gas plants ahead of the 2011 provincial election. (The Canadian Press)



A new report says at least one-thousand new rental units planned for the province have been cancelled since the government introduced new rent control rules in the spring.

The report -- which was commissioned by the Federation of Rental-Housing Providers of Ontario -- says about 28-thousand units were in the planning stages before the province's Fair Housing Plan was introduced.

It says one-thousand of them have been cancelled or converted to condominiums.

Housing Minister Peter Milczyn says there are no plans to change the rules which cap annual rent increases in both older and newer buildings. (The Canadian Press)



Ontario's opposition parties say the Liberal government is using public money to make itself look good.

The New Democrats say government documents show 5.5 million dollars has been earmarked to advertise cuts to hydro bills over a two-year period.

Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault says the ads are needed to let people know about hydro bill reductions so they can adjust their household budgets.

N-D-P Leader Andrea Horwath says there's no need for the ads, since people can see their bills have gone down. …
