College Leaders Here Collaborate to Help Prevent Sexual Assault

September means back to school and off to college for many families. It's also a time of risk and vulnerability for students. Nationally, one in every five women and one in 16 men are victims of sexual assault during college (National Sexual Violence Resource Center). Many institutions of higher learning still aren't doing enough to address and prevent campus sexual assault.

I'm exceptionally proud that college and university leaders in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties have taken a stand on this issue. Many of them have collaborated with Pittsburgh Action Against Rape and Blackburn Center, law enforcement, hospitals and researchers to prevent violence and to offer support to victims of assault.

Recently, presidents from Carlow University, Carnegie Mellon University, Chatham University, Community College of Allegheny County, Duquesne University, La Roche College, Point Park University, Robert Morris University, Saint Vincent College, Seton Hill University, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg and Westmoreland County Community College expressed their commitment to student safety and supporting victims in a new video series at southwestpasaysnomore. …
