TORONTO. x-21s. British Columbia's new N-D-P government is experiencing a backlash after walking back its election pledge not to use public money to pay political parties. But an analysis from The Canadian Press shows that the amount of money parties would get under the New Democrat's proposed system -- about 16-million dollars -- is virtually identical to the estimated amount taxpayers doled out in the form of tax benefits between the last two elections. Robert MacDermid, a campaign finance expert at York University, says 16-million dollars is almost nothing in a provincial budget of roughly 52-billion dollars.
