Georgia chosen for 1st new Purina plant in 20 years

Nestl Purina PetCare is opening a $320 million manufacturing and distribution facility in northeastern Georgia, its first new U.S. plant in 20 years.

The maker of Dog Chow, Friskies and other pet foods, which has its North American headquarters in St. Louis, said the plant in Hartwell, Ga., will create up to 240 jobs over five years.

The distribution center will open next year and production will begin in 2019. Purina already operates a factory in Fairburn, Ga.

Delphi splitting in two * Auto parts maker Delphi plans to split itself into two companies early next year.

One company, called Aptiv, will focus on electronic safety systems, autonomous cars and the electrical backbone of vehicles. The other firm will be named Delphi Technologies and will focus on combustion engine parts, software controls and electric vehicle components.

The idea is to separate high-growth advanced technologies from older parts businesses. Sweden's Autoliv also plans a split, with one company making passive devices like air bags and the other focusing on electronics that prevent crashes.

Wal-Mart eyes diaper business * Wal-Mart is relaunching its Parent's Choice brand in an attempt to get a piece of the premium diaper market.

Along with diapers, which are in some Walmart stores now, the line will include bedding, baby lotion and sippy cups.

Ryanair cancels more flights * Dublin-based Ryanair will extend flight cancellations into next year and drop a bid for bankrupt Italian carrier Alitalia as it struggles with a pilot shortage.

Ryanair will operate 25 fewer planes than planned during its winter schedule starting in November, and then 10 fewer after April, it said Wednesday. That will mean canceling 18,000 flights on which about 400,000 passengers have booked. Some 315,000 people had already had travel plans disrupted through October. …
