62-Year-Old Gets Murder Charges

A 62-year-old man was charged Thursday with two counts of murder in the weekend slayings of two men in a downtown Topeka complex.

Defendant Maximo Campillo-Echevarria was charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of intentional second-degree murder, aggravated arson and an aggravated weapons violation, a statement issued by Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay said.

Campillo-Echevarria remains in custody in lieu of a $2 million bond.

The Topeka Police Department and the Topeka Fire Department are investigating the slayings and fire.

Just after 6 p.m. Sunday, law enforcement officers were dispatched to 800 S.W. Polk, Apt. 2, where a stabbing was reported.

Police found Thomas O'Conner in the apartment suffering from stab wounds and several burns on his body. …
