The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority is making sure health practitioners are prepared for a slew of changes coming next week.

Health Minister Kelvin Goertzen says the changes are intended to improve quality and timeliness of patient care.

They were announced in the spring as part of a response to a 2015 report covering excessive wait times, high number of patient transfers and limited physicians and resources across the province.

The report was written by Nova Scotia-based health care consultant Dr. David Peachey following hundreds of conversations with Manitobans from across the province. (CTV Winnipeg)

Court documents indicate that over the last 16 years, three women tried and failed to get protection orders against a member of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service who is now facing sex charges.

In all three cases, a judge dismissed the application, though no reason was given.

Manuel Vladimir Ruiz, who is 52, is now accused of sexually assaulting a female youth and a woman, and with obtaining the sexual services of a person under the age of 18.

Police say Ruiz is also facing charges of sexual interference, forcible confinement and luring a child. (CTV Winnipeg)

A former University of Saskatchewan hockey player has died in a jet ski crash in Florida.

Craig Butz played with the Huskies for five seasons in the 1980s before earning a doctorate in special education in the U.S. and becoming head of the Pepin Academies charter schools.

According to local media, Butz was with his four-year-old daughter when their jet ski crashed into a boat near Tampa. The girl remains in critical condition.

Former teammate Dan Leier says Butz will have a lasting impact on those he met on and off the ice. (CTV Saskatoon)
