TOMORROW (SATURDAY 30) Visual arts / New North and South The expression 'long overdue' springs to mind when reflecting on this month's New North and South arts programme. Launching this weekend, the ambitious project will mark the 70th anniversary of partition - an event which saw 15 million people being displaced and over a million killed following the 1947 division of British India to form India and Pakistan.

Surprisingly, though, this worldchanging event has largely been unexplored in UK museums - until now, that is. Running over three years, the 'New North and South' programme will take over some of Manchester's leading galleries and museums - including The Whitworth, MOSI, Manchester Art Gallery and Manchester Museum - with an impressive line-up of exhibitions, events and talks. Welcoming leading artists from South Asia, and British artists of South Asian descent, the citywide programme will explore the history and culture of South Asia from the earliest periods of human occupation to the modern day diaspora. …
