NAT079 - (Hiker-Dead) NORTH VANCOUVER. x-18s. A day of rock climbing on Vancouver's North Shore mountains ended in tragedy when one climber fell to his death. North Shore Rescue spokesman Mike Danks says it happened yesterday afternoon near Crown Mountain on a route known as Widowmaker. Danks says the men were lead climbing -- meaning the lead climber is belayed from below by his partner and is protected by anchors placed in the rock -- meant to stop a fall if one occurs. But Danks says all four of the anchors the man had set pulled out when he fell -- and the second man suffered severe rope burn to his hands trying to stop the plunge.
