OLIVETTE > Groups clash over city/county merger * Research from Better Together that shows $600 per person per year in unneeded government spending in St. Louis City and County is invalid, and the region spends local tax dollars more efficiently, the University of Missouri-St. Louis Public Policy Research Center says.

Center director Mark Tranel told the Municipal League of Metro St. Louis on Thursday that Better Together's study of the Louisville and Indianapolis areas, where governmental mergers occurred, does not include public spending on health, sports venues and airports. "We actually come out with $45 less per person spending annually," he told representatives of about 25 cities in Olivette at the league's meeting.

Better Together is a privately-funded lobbying group which supports some kind of city/county consolidation or merger; the Municipal League has been generally skeptical and opposes the suggestion in the Missouri legislature that there should be a statewide vote on such a measure. …
