I am writing to offer a counterargument to Rich Lord's analysis ("Pittsburgh's Powerful Non-Profits," Sept. 11) of the impact of private foundations on the direction and future of Pittsburgh. As a relative newcomer, I have always been impressed by the unique public-private partnerships that have enriched and enhanced so many aspects of this region. We are the envy of so many other cities.

I've seen photos and read articles about the blight on Penn and Liberty avenues prior to the foundation-driven creation of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, and I've been a part of the incredibly successful transformation of our Downtown to a viable and important center for culture and entertainment. Pittsburgh's newest reputation as a "foodie" city is one of the most evident results of this transformation.
