New Academy Approach Sees Players Move Up Ranks

CITY have made an important change to their academy for this season.

For the last few years the emphasis has been firmly on the team at the Etihad Campus, with players rarely promoted above their age group.

The idea was that the youngsters would benefit both because they would be made to work for their opportunities and that the Under-18s would avoid losing any hunger or motivation that they might have done had they been stuck in the EDS for too many years.

However, with three Youth Cup finals but little sign of progression to Pep Guardiola's first team, chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak hinted at a change in strategy and that has been plainly seen so far this season.

City have reverted to their previous plan, moving their players up through the age groups as both the Under-18 and Under-23 teams look younger than ever. …
