JOSE Mourinho has backed Ashley Young and insists he never considered selling the 32-year-old in the summer.

The United boss made the versatile winger/full-back his captain for 4-1 Champions League match against CSKA Moscow in Russia in midweek.

Young has returned from the injury he sustained last May in Spain against Celta Vigo in the Europa League and played four of the Reds' last five matches.

He's been impressive at both right-back and left-back.

His form follows summer speculation he was set to leave Old Trafford and was surplus to requirements - former clubs Watford and Aston Villa were both linked with him.

But Mourinho has knocked back those suggestions of an exit.

"Suggestions, but not from me," said the United manager.

"I always thought he was not to leave, he wants to stay. …
