Police ID Man Killed in Shooting

Article excerpt

Topeka police were seeking the public's help to track down the person who shot and killed a man and critically wounded a woman early Tuesday at a central Topeka apartment building.

The homicide victim was identified as Joshua A. Jernagin, 30, of Topeka.

The shooting was reported about 4:30 a.m. at the Westview Apartments, a three-story, brick building at 1324 S.W. Western, where another homicide had occurred four years ago.

Officers shined flashlights as they walked in streets near the apartment building where the shooting occurred. They also shined flashlights in a grassy area between the Westview Apartments and another apartment building located immediately to the north.

Additionally, a Topeka police K-9 unit was called to the scene in an effort to get a trail of the person who shot Jernigan and the woman on the second-floor of the apartment building before fleeing.

Topeka police on Tuesday afternoon continued their efforts to get information from the public regarding the shooting. Officers were stationed near S.W. 13th and Western, where they were attempting to find pedestrians and motorists who may have witnessed anything early Tuesday that was related.

A couple of hours after the shooting on Tuesday morning, a man who said his name was James said he had seen Jernigan playing football with about 20 neighborhood kids Monday evening on the front lawn of the apartment building.

James, who said he lives at the apartment building, said the woman who was wounded recently had given birth to a baby and would walk every morning to her job at the downtown McDonald's, about a mile away. He said Jernigan would stay home and watch the couple's children.

Nikiea Williams, another apartment resident, said she heard arguing in the hallway before the shooting. …
