POLICE have issued a warning following a spate of ATM scams in Manchester city centre.

The first victim was approached on Market Street by a man asking to swap a £20 for two £10 notes, in the early hours of Sunday.

The man and the victim walked to a nearby ATM machine where this could be done. He was then offered free drugs by the man, who reached into his back pocket to retrieve the apparent sample.

But the victim later realised there were no drugs and his bank card had been stolen during the encounter.

When he checked his bank account £220 had been taken by the fraudster, who had presumably been watching the victim entering his pin into the card machine.

Another scam took place on September 24 when a victim was approached in Spinningfields and was encouraged to withdraw cash from an ATM to swap a £10 for two £5 notes. …
