NAT142 - (Sherritt-Mine-Fine) CALGARY. x-09s. Sherritt International is being fined one million dollars after pleading guilty in an Alberta court to three counts under the federal Fisheries Act. The Toronto company was charged five years ago over incidents where waste water considered harmful to fish was allowed to flow from the Coal Valley Mine near Jasper National Park into tributaries of the Athabasca River. Daniel Smith, regional director for environmental enforcement for Environment Canada in Edmonton, says the size of the fine shows how serious the offence was. ("..environment is important.")
