Burgess Packs Them in at Our CityLife Gig

TIM Burgess and Mark Collins packed out the CityLife stage at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival last night at a surprise free gig.

The Charlatans' pair only announced the acoustic gig and chat with the M.E.N.'s Simon Binns last week, but still managed to draw hundreds down to Albert Square to hear about the making of their most recent album Different Days - including how they came to collaborate with The Smiths' Johnny Marr, but missed out on Neneh Cherry.

"We could have had Johnny for more for the album, but we just ran out of time," said Mark.

"We'd been talking about doing something for ages though, it had just never come off before.

"With Neneh, we've been after her for years," said Tim.

"We knocked one track around for ages but it just wasn't quite working out. But we're never saying never."

The CityLife stage - in the MFDF hub at Albert Square - had a variety of acts on across the day, including The Travelling Band's Steve Ballinger, The Rain Band and Josh Goddard. …
