Ferguson Hardware Store Closing after More Than 50 Years

After more than a half century in business, the Ferguson True Value hardware store is closing at the end of the month.

The hardware store at 103 South Florissant Road has operated under several names over the years, said Kim Taylor, its owner since 2000.

Taylor said the closure of the business, which has four employees, is due to a slowdown in sales that started to decline before protests in the area related to the 2014 shooting death of Michael Brown by a Ferguson police officer. A window at the hardware store was broken by protesters in November 2014 after St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch announced Officer Darren Wilson would not be indicted for Brown's death.

"There's just not enough business," Taylor said. "I started to see a decline about six or seven years ago. …
