If only walls really could talk then this two-bedroom apartment could get a job as a gossip columnist.

During the 1960s it was party central for some of the world's most famous people, including Charlie Chaplin - who held a birthday there - as well as photographers Cecil Beaton and Lord Snowdon, actors Lawrence Olivier, Omar Sharif and Elizabeth Taylor, and Princess Margaret.

The property belonged to a Sri Lankan socialite called Sharmini Tiruchelvam who, although littleknown now, was at the time one of the world's most beautiful women. She was a model for many artists including - most famously - Picasso and graced the front covers of many fashion magazines. After arriving in the UK from Sri Lanka as a teenager she eventually got a job as a freelance writer for The Telegraph newspaper, but it was her beauty that made her famous - and helped her open doors. …
