FIRE crews have again been attacked after yobs lured them into ambushes.

The latest incidents - both on the same estate in Leigh - means firefighters have been targeted six times in three weeks in Greater Manchester.

There has also been a huge increase in attacks compared to last year.

In the first of two attacks this week, firefighters had been called to reports of a fire on Holly Grove, Leigh, at 8.14pm on Monday. When they arrived a mattress was on fire in the alleyway which they quickly extinguished.

As they were leaving the youths hurled stones and cement at their engine, causing minor damage.

Just before 6pm on Tuesday another 999 call was made to report a fire in the woodland near to Cedar Road, Leigh. Firefighters found five wheelie bins alight and started to put out the blaze.

They immediately came under attack from a group of youths throwing rocks. …
