B-C's chief coroner says between January and the end of August, more than a thousand people died from illicit drug overdoses in the province, surpassing last year's record of 982 reported overdose deaths.

The latest figures from the coroner's service show fentanyl was detected either alone or with another drug in more than 80 per cent of the deaths this year.

Chief coroner Lisa Lapointe says the increase in deaths highlights the complex issues of drug dependency and the need for people to understand that no illicit substance can be considered safe. (12)

A Canadian-American couple and their three young children have told U-S officials they want to fly commercially to Canada following their release from five years in captivity.

Canadian Joshua Boyle and American Caitlan Coleman were kidnapped while travelling in Afghanistan in 2012, and all three children were born while they were being held by the Taliban-linked Haqqani network.

A U-S official says the plan had been to move the family out of Pakistan on a U-S transport plane, but Boyle refused to board at the last minute because he was worried about being in "custody," given he had once been married to the sister of former Guantanamo Bay inmate Omar Khadr.

Authorities discounted any link between that background and Boyle's capture, with one official describing it as a "horrible coincidence." (12)



An R-C-M-P questionnaire singling out Muslim asylum seekers has been taken out of circulation after being deemed inappropriate.

The questionnaire was used at the Quebec border crossing this summer, where an influx of thousands of asylum seekers attempted to cross from the U-S.

It asked opinions about freedom of religious practice, head coverings associated with Muslim women and terrorist groups with mainly Muslim members. …
