MAPLEWOOD * The neighborhood was quiet that evening. No car traffic. No trains on nearby tracks.

Karen Newman decided to do some paperwork on the front porch, with her dog, Maddie.

"It was extremely quiet," Newman said Saturday. "It was just dead silent. I remember thinking, 'I've never had it this quiet.' It was kind of eerie."

She stepped inside briefly that evening, on Oct. 4, to grab her ringing phone. She came back outside and looked down. Maddie had vanished.

"It's like she went up in a cloud of smoke," Newman said of when the 12-year-old coton de tulear with white curly hair disappeared. She said the dog is microchipped and was wearing a blue collar when she went missing.

Newman, 68, lives on Greenwood Boulevard in Maplewood with her ex-husband, Jamie Stitt, 56. Stitt has diabetes and suffers frequent seizures along with other health issues, he said.

He said Maddie, who weighs about 15 pounds, helped him with both, nudging him when his blood sugar was too low or too high, or when she sensed a seizure coming. …
