5K in Counselor's Memory Raises $10,000

Just before participants stepped across the starting line Sunday afternoon, organizers of the Gail Kaiser Memorial 5K Walk/Run announced they had reached their goal of raising $10,000 for students in need.

Kaiser, who died suddenly in January 2016, had been a counselor since 1995 at Topeka West High School. The event Sunday began at the high school's track and wound around streets in the vicinity.

"Her memory is still very much alive," said Cathy Williams, Kaiser's sister.

This is the second year the "GK5K" has been held.

The money raised benefits the Caring Counselor Fund.

Counselors at Topeka West use the fund to help students who aren't able to afford things such as uniforms, school supplies or the ACT registration fee.

Williams said that in some ways, it seemed as if Kaiser was still here -- helping others and making a difference. …
