Hayden's Brooklyn Hunter, Rural State Placers Headline 2017 All-City Girls Tennis

Hayden junior singles star Brooklyn Hunter leads the 2017 All-City girls tennis team after dominating the Class 4A state meet en route to her third straight state championship.

Hunter, 21-0 this fall and 58-1 in her career, also won her third straight city and 4A regional title and won her second straight Centennial League championship. Hunter is one of just five players who have won three 4A state singles titles.

Joining Hunter on the All-City team are fellow state placers Cortlyn Wolfe, Lauren Pryor and Rachel Osborn of Washburn Rural.

Pryor, a sophomore, and Wolfe, a senior, finished seventh in 6A doubles after sweeping city, league and regional titles. Osborn, a freshman, took eighth in 6A singles and also won a regional title for the Junior Blues, who swept city, league and regional titles before finishing fourth as a team at state.

Rural put all six of its varsity players on the All-City team, with junior Haley Kucera winning the city title in No. 2 singles and finishing second at regionals while seniors Maddie Aarnes and Hallie Beard won the city No. 2 doubles championship and finished second in the league meet.

Hayden juniors Sara Comstock and Julia Hammes were second in the city in No. 1 doubles and earned a trip to the 4A state tournament while Seaman senior Sydnie Crow was third in the city meet in No. 1 singles and earned her second straight 5A state berth. Topeka West's doubles team of junior Taylor Amen and senior Calista Esquer round out the All-City team, earning a third-place finish in No. 1 doubles in the city meet.

All-City capsules:

MADDIE AARNES, Washburn Rural -- Aarnes, a senior, teamed with Hallie Beard to win the city title in No. 2 doubles. Aarnes and Beard finished second in the Centennial League and third in a 6A regional to earn a state berth.

TAYLOR AMEN, Topeka West -- A junior, Amen earned her spot on the All-City team with a solid performance in the city meet, teaming with Calista Esquer to finish third in No. 1 doubles.

HALLIE BEARD, Washburn Rural -- Beard, a senior, teamed with Aarnes to win the city title in No. 2 doubles. Beard and Aarnes finished second in the Centennial League and third in a 6A regional to earn a state berth. …
