Broady Hits Back to KO Wimbledon Finalist in Luxembourg

NAOMI Broady saved two match points and won 10 of the last 13 games to beat former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki at the Luxembourg Open.

Broady, from Stockport, looked to be heading out when she trailed by a set and 3-5 in their second round encounter, with Lisicki twice bringing up match point on the British number three's serve.

But Broady, who lost in the final round of qualifying but was given a lucky loser spot, dug deep to hold and then broke the Lisicki serve twice in succession to level the match.

She extended her run of games to seven to lead 3-0 in the decider and did not let her advantage slip, winning 4-6 7-5 6-3 to reach her first WTA Tour quarter-final since February 2016.

Lisicki is not the player she was having slipped to 262 in the world rankings following injury but this was still a terrific win for 27-year-old Broady, who next faces either Olympic gold medallist Monica Puig or Alison van Uytvanck. …
