I am a lifelong Catholic who as a young man studied for the priesthood for seven years. I was impressed with Tasha Wheeler's letter, "Catholics Are Missing Out on Some Gifted Priests" (Oct. 16). She discusses the current reorganization occurring in the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese, which is necessitated at least partly by the shortage of priests. She then references the fact that women are ordained in the Episcopal Church and suggests that this would be a solution for the Catholic Church. I strongly agree. There are other religions that are doing so as well.

I also believe that allowing Catholic priests to marry is another change that would eventually help in eliminating this problem. It is a fact that priests in the early church did marry; it wasn't until about the 11th century that the rules were changed. …
