Regent Square Theater Rises Again in Time for Halloween

The Regent Square Theater is set to reopen Friday with the five-day Halloween film showcase "Regent SCARE!"

The Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts theater had been closed since May 28 due to problems with projection equipment. The theater will make its comeback after renovations that were "both aesthetic and functional," according to a press release.

The five days of film frights include a free screening of the restored "Effects," a Pittsburgh-filmed meta movie about a low-budget horror movie gone wrong. It was created by friends and alumni of the late filmmaker George Romero, including Tom Savini ("Dawn of the Dead"), Joe Pilato ("Day of the Dead") and John Harrison ("Creepshow"). "Effects" will be screened Friday along with two other "Hometown Horrors": "Beetlejuice," starring Coraopolis native Michael Keaton, and the Oscar-winning "The Silence of the Lambs," shot primarily in Pittsburgh. …
