(Morneau-Conflict-Interest) (Audio: P02)

Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau says he is confident he can continue working to deliver the Liberal government's tax plans, despite the controversy surrounding his personal assets.

The opposition is accusing Morneau of being in a conflict of interest for failing to place his substantial assets into a blind trust.

But Morneau says he made sure to disclose all of his assets to the federal ethics watchdog when he came into office, and he insists he followed her advice very carefully. (9)

Canada's opioid crisis and plans to legalize marijuana are the main topics of discussion as provincial and territorial leaders meet in Edmonton today for two days of meetings.

Deaths from opioid abuse are expected to surpass three-thousand this year, and the ministers say they need to compare notes on what is and is not working.

The ministers will also get an update from federal Health Minister Ginette Petipas Taylor on implementing rules surrounding the legalization of cannabis next summer. (9)

Canada's top court says when it comes to deciding whether a permanent resident should lose their status in Canada, conditional sentences are not considered as jail time.

The Supreme Court of Canada also says that deciding whether a permanent resident is inadmissible to Canada hinges on the maximum sentence on the books only at the time they committed the offence.

The Supreme Court decision is in reference to the 2013 drug conviction of Thanh Tam Tran, who was given a 12 month conditional sentence to be served in the community after being found guilty of running a marijuana grow up.

A section of immigration law renders a person inadmissible to Canada if they're convicted of a crime with a maximum 10 year penalty or given a term of imprisonment for at least six months. …
