Early Wegmans Parking Banned

Article excerpt

MONTVALE -- Eager Wegmans shoppers, Mayor Mike Ghassali has some bad news for you: No camping will be allowed in the store's parking lot - or anywhere in the borough - ahead of its grand opening on Sunday.

Further, those who wish to line up before the 7 a.m. opening will be monitored, and patrol will be on duty, the mayor said.

The decision comes on the heels of the grocery chain's grand opening of a store in Hanover in July. About 24,000 people showed up to that event, with some arriving the night before just for a chance to get in first.

The opening of the Montvale supermarket, Bergen County's first Wegmans, is expected to generate similar crowds.

Borough officials estimate about 15,000 to 20,000 vehicles will fill the town's streets on Sunday.

In preparation for the increased traffic, Ghassali said Wegmans has agreed to pay 14 borough police officers to work traffic detail that day. About 750 overflow parking spaces will also be available in the Mercedes-Benz USA lot, across the street from the Shoppes at DePiero site, which is anchored by Wegmans.

The borough library, which is near Wegmans, will also be closed to the public to avoid any excess traffic that may be headed there.

"It is expected that Sunday the 24th will be the busiest day and then traffic will normalize two to three days after that, with full normalcy taking effect in about two weeks," Ghassali said in an email to residents.

The excitement leading up to the opening of the Montvale Wegmans may seem bizarre to some, but the family-owned business has long been lauded for its customer satisfaction and quality. Hanover's opening was the first in New Jersey in more than 10 years, and Montvale will be its northernmost location in the state.

Montvale has been preparing for the store's opening for months, widening surrounding roads and installing new traffic signals near the store, which is situated between West Grand Avenue, Mercedes Drive and Philips Parkway. …
